Confirmatory testing for HIV self-tests

January 11, 2023

As a partner in Canada’s HIV response, we would like to inform you about a large pan-Canadian HIV self-testing project that may diversify the types of inquiries and clients you may receive over the coming months.

In August 2022, the Government of Canada announced new funding to purchase and distribute HIV self-test kits across the country. The kits will be distributed to individuals and communities most affected by HIV through a combination of community-based organizations and mail orders placed online.

The HIV self-test approved in Canada is highly accurate, but Canadian guidelines recommend that individuals with reactive self-test results undergo confirmatory testing. Those with reactive results will be encouraged to seek confirmatory testing and follow-up care and support through their healthcare provider or a local HIV testing provider. Self-test users may also seek referrals to HIV prevention, mental health services and more. Some of these inquiries may come to you.

HIV self-testing is an extension of Canada’s HIV testing infrastructure, not a replacement. Research has shown that self-testing reaches populations that experience structural inequities in accessing the healthcare system, including first-time testers and others who would otherwise not get tested. It is the first step towards diagnosis, treatment and support. With 10% of HIV-positive Canadians still undiagnosed, we need to use every tool at our disposal to link them to diagnosis, treatment and care.

Distribution of self-test kits began in November 2022 and will be continuing until at least March 2023. Extension of the project will depend on the evaluation of results and continued funding. The project partners will keep you informed of ongoing developments with this project, and we are open to any feedback you have about how the project could complement your own efforts to test and diagnose people with HIV.
