The Mpowerment program at YouthCO provides HIV leadership and skill-development opportunities by and for young gay, bi, queer and trans guys in Vancouver. In response to a demand for dedicated programming for young gay men in the city, YouthCO adapted the U.S.-based model of the Mpowerment program for the Canadian context. With the help of 10 or so core group volunteers, Mpowerment offers a mix of fun, informal social events and sexual health programming for other young gay men in the community, such as trampoline dodgeball or game nights. At the same time, the core group develops practical skills in leadership, sexual wellness and event planning. “It’s an opportunity for the guys to show off their skills and get recognition for them,” says Sarah Chown, Program Director at YouthCO.
