INFOnurseX Talk Sex Program

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit
Simcoe-Muskoka District, ON
2015

The INFOnurseX Talk Sex program, run by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) in Ontario, aims to raise online awareness around sexual health and HIV testing for men who have sex with men (MSM).  For one hour a day, a public health nurse is available on Squirt, a hookup site for MSM, to chat live and answer sexual health questions. In collaboration with the AIDS Committee of Simcoe County, the program was developed to address a spike in regional HIV rates among MSM in 2010/11. “It’s a safe and confidential way for MSM to get information about sexual health,” says Jillian Fenik, Sexual Health Program Manager. As a result of this targeted online strategy, which also includes banner ads and eblasts on Squirt, the number of men accessing sexual health services and HIV testing at the health unit’s various sites has increased significantly. Due to the program’s success, SMDHU received the Judges’ Award for Innovation for the ImagineNation Public Health Social Media Challenge presented by Canada Health Infoway.
