Welcome news for Vancouver’s InSite … and for Canada
Supreme Court of Canada upholds BC Court of Appeal’s decision: BC may provide injection drug services
The decision of the Supreme Court of Canada, announced September 30, is a victory for evidence-based science over ideology. It represents a new direction in humane health care in Canada. It means that the vital work of InSite can continue without the continual threat of legal interference. It means we can now add supervised injection services to the national arsenal of available public health tools to confront the challenges of HIV and hepatitis C among our most marginalized citizens. Provinces who have been waiting can now take steps to set up similar services to address the health needs of people who use injection drugs. BC has been a leader in this area and now the rest of Canada can benefit from their experience.
