Rhonda Stevens, 32
Toronto, Ontario

Diagnosed with HIV: 1994
CD4 count: around 300
Viral load: undetectable

Peer educator at various AIDS organizations.

After I was diagnosed, I immediately sought support. I wanted to understand what I was living with. My doctor didn’t know much about HIV but she had phone numbers for me to call. I called the AIDS hotline immediately, and then I called Black CAP and somebody came to visit me. The best thing is to seek support and try not to stay by yourself, because you can get overwhelmed and depressed. There’s a lot of good support out there. Tell yourself that life goes on. I’m going back to college this year.

Decisions about particular medical treatments should always be made in consultation with a qualified medical practitioner who is knowledgeable about HIV-related illness and the treatments in question. MORE
